Blackflies by R.W.Crosskey
Until now the enquiring entomologist has needed to scan a massive, scattered and sometimes abstruse literature to uncover information about the general biology of the flies of the family Simuiidae (blackflies).
Publication of this book provides a synthesis of the reservoir of what is known about Simuliidae. It is the result of many years of research and distillation which began in 1951 with field studies on river blindness in West Africa and now culminating in this comprehensive volume. The author's guiding theme has been to provide a readable text for freshwater biologists, tropical doctors, parasitologists, veterinarians and cytologists, part of whose work may be concerned with blackflies but who have neither the time nor the inclination to enter the recondite specialist literature.
The book contains many beautifully drawn illustrations and 1200 scientific references.
The author began his career as a medical entomologist with the Nigerian Ministry of Health, and is now a Senior Principal Scientific Officer in the Department of Entomology of the British Museum (Natural History) with special responsibility for taxonomic and other studies on Simuliidae in reference to onchocerciasis.
